 ORTHOPAEDICS

 

About Department

  • Orthopaedics department runs a daily out patient department

  • O.P.D. is run every day twice a day (morning and evening)

  • 200 patients daily on OPD basis are treated

  • Three unit in the dept. are headed by PROFESSOR, ADDITIONAL PROFESSOR and ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR.

  • Dept. has separate dressing room for dressing of indoor patients

  • Dept. has orthotic and prosthetic workshop

  • Separate spinal ward is there to provide special care for paraplegia patients and quadruplegics

  • In emergency dept., 24 hours round the clock emergency sevices are provided by 4 units every day

Staff

• Each unit is headed by either professor, additional professor or associate professor.
• In each unit there are two assistant professors.
• Each unit is having 2 third year residents, 2 or 1 2nd year residents and 1 1st year residents.

• In the orthopaedics dept. , various trauma, spinal and joint replacement surgeries are carried out like-

  • Hip joint replacement 1) uncemented 2) Cemented

  • Knee joint replacement

  • Shoulder joint replacement

  • Elbow joint replacement

  • Spinal surgeries including posterior spinal fixation

  • Arthroscopic knee surgeries including

    1. diagnostic arthroscopy

    2. A.C.L. reconstruction

    3. meniscal balancing with arthroscopy

    4. foreign body removal by arthroscopy

  • Surgeries for cubitus varus and valgus

  • Surgeries for medlung deformity

  • Surgeries for intertrochanteric fractures including proximal femoral nailing, dynamic hip screw fixation

  • Surgeries for subtrochanteric fractures including proximal femoral nailing , dynamic Condylar screw fixation.

  • Surgeries for the shaft femur fractures including femoral nailing, sirus nailing

  • Surgeries for the supracondylar fractures including Condylar buttress plating, intramedullary supracondylar nailing, dynamic Condylar screw fixation.

  • Surgeries for patella like tension band wiring, encirclage patella, partial patellectomy and patellar tendon repair, total patellectomy

  • Surgeries for tibia in form of minimally invasive percutaneous plate osteosynthesis, interlocking nailing, plating for the tibia fractures, tibia external fixator etc

  • Surgeries for malleolar fractures like tension band wiring, cannulated cancellous screw fixation, fibular plating, rush pin fixation of fibula etc.

  • Surgeries for congenital anomalies like congenital talipes equino varus etc

  • Surgeries for the foot fractures like calcaneum plating etc

  • Surgeries for Humerus fractures like interlocking nailing, plating etc

  • Surgeries for radius ulna fractures like plating, rush pin fixation, k wire fixation etc

  • Surgeries for the hand fractures.

  • Surgeries for wrist fractures like scaphoid fractures fixation with Herbert screws etc

  • Surgeries for spinal fractures

  • Surgeries for spinal disc lesions like discectomy etc

  • Surgeries for infective spine disease like tuberculosis

  • Surgeries for hip joint pathologies like perthe’s disease like osteotomies etc

Teaching

• In orthopaedics department, U.G. and P.G. students are taught according to the syllabus.
• We have separate seminar rooms for teaching U.G. and P.G. students.
• We have separate library with recent books on orthopaedics including trauma and joint replacement.
• U.G. teaching is carried out during their ward duty time including clinics are taken in wards and integrated lectures are taken according to the batch of undergraduate students.
• P.G. teaching includes seminar and case presentation on recent researches in orthopaedics and trauma as well as cold topics in orthopaedics.
• P.G. teaching is also carried out in O.P.D., wards, and operation theatres also.

Research

  • In the department, post graduate student are given dissertation on recent advance topics

  • The thesis work carried out is guided by post graduate teachers

  • Different papers are published from staff members of orthopaedics department at international and national levels

  • Many of our staff members have joined fellowships in foreign countries and achieved speciality skills in arthroscopy and arthroplasty of hip and knee

  • In the department, drug trials are conducted about recent advanced drugs

Facilities

• The department has 2 separate operation theatre complex for the emergency and planned surgeries.
• 10-12 planned operations are carried out every day in orthopaedics operation theatre.
• In operation theatre, we have I.I.T.V.s for performing trauma surgeries.
• We have separate I.I.T.V. for the emergency operation theatre.
• We have basic infrastructure like cautery, overhead O.T. lights, air conditioners etc.
• There is laminar air flow for better surgical environment especially joint replacement surgeries.
• In operation theatre, we have shaver system for the arthroscopic surgeries.
• For Arthroscopic surgeries, we have arthroscopic instrument set.
• In operation theatre, we have different instrument sets like D.H.S. set, Proximal Femoral Nailing set, Femur Nailing set, Tibia Nailing set, Humerus Nailing Set, Tibia Plating set, Spine Surgery set, etc.
• In operation theatres, trauma and spinal surgeries are performed on fracture table with different attachments.
• Large horizontal autoclave machine provides autoclaving of instruments and implants for the surgeries.
• Recovery area in operation theatre has beds for postoperative patients care.
• We have 3 wards in orthopaedics dept. containing 30 beds each with average occupancy of 150% in each ward.
• All wards have basic facilities for orthopaedic patient care and treatment.
 

Residency

As per M.C.I. Guidelines, every year 6 postgraduate degree students (M.S.) are admitted in the orthopaedics dept.
